The new George Steinbrenner Band Building at the University of Florida was completed in June 2008. The building is home to the University of Florida Marching Band and has an extensive sheet music library and instrument storage area, and most importantly, a 5,500 square foot rehearsal hall, large enough for 300 performers.
The project is unique in many ways, including a pedestrian plaza, outdoor teaching lab, and grassed area over top a portion of the building's main level. The building's architecture is a blend of traditional UF design with a mix of modern touches, including zinc wall panels, which take their cue from M.E. Rinker Hall across the street.
Through the efforts of the entire project team, the project which was originally intended to achieve Silver LEED® certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), has achieved Gold LEED® certification.
